Why this matters here

Older Indian survey and revenue records sit on the Everest spheroid, not WGS 84. Treating one as the other puts everything a few hundred metres out — enough to move a plot boundary onto a neighbour.

Indian systems included

Kalianpur 1880, 1937 and 1975, the India zone grids, UTM zones 42N to 47N on both WGS 84 and Indian datums, and the WGS 84 state systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is the distance real metres?

Yes. Buffers are built from geodesic circles on the WGS 84 ellipsoid using the local radius of curvature, so a 50 metre buffer is 50 metres in every direction. Tools that buffer in degrees are wrong by about 5% east to west at this latitude.

Can I shrink instead of grow?

Yes, with a negative distance, on areas. Shrinking by more than the shape is wide removes it entirely, and you will be told when that happens.

Do overlapping buffers merge?

Buffers of a single feature merge into one shape. Separate features stay separate, so run dissolve afterwards if you want one continuous zone.
