Land Area and Perimeter Calculator

Measure area and perimeter from any GIS file, in hectares, acres, gunthas, ares and square feet. Measured on the WGS 84 ellipsoid rather than on flat coordinates, so the numbers hold up against a survey.

Why this matters here

Older Indian survey and revenue records sit on the Everest spheroid, not WGS 84. Treating one as the other puts everything a few hundred metres out — enough to move a plot boundary onto a neighbour.

Indian systems included

Kalianpur 1880, 1937 and 1975, the India zone grids, UTM zones 42N to 47N on both WGS 84 and Indian datums, and the WGS 84 state systems.

Bulk paste

Paste a column straight out of a spreadsheet. Anything after the first two values is carried through as a label, and the result downloads as CSV.

Nothing leaves your device

The arithmetic runs in your browser with proj4. No coordinate is transmitted, logged or stored anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How is the area calculated?

On the WGS 84 ellipsoid, not on the flat coordinates. Most online tools treat degrees as a plane, which overstates area by up to 0.7 per cent. On a one acre plot that is about a quarter of a guntha, which is enough to matter in a land record.

How many square metres is a guntha?

One acre is exactly 40 gunthas, which makes a guntha 101.17 square metres. That holds across Maharashtra. Bigha is deliberately not offered here because it varies between states and even between districts, so a single figure would be misleading.

Which files can I measure?

Anything the converters read: KML, KMZ, Shapefile, GeoJSON, GPX, CSV, Excel, WKT, TopoJSON, GeoJSONSeq, DXF and GeoPackage. Each feature is measured separately and totalled.

Are holes subtracted?

Yes. A plot with an internal exclusion reports the net area, which is what a record of rights would show.

What if my file is in UTM rather than degrees?

Convert it first with any converter here, choosing the input coordinate system. Area is measured from latitude and longitude, so projected coordinates need reprojecting first.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The measurement runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
